Path Memory 2.0 backs up paths to Message Topics and the Message folders used by TeleFinder BBSes. Using Path Memory requires 2 steps:
• Backup - In this step Path Memory scans your disk for Message Topic files. When it finds a message topic it then finds the Message folder associated with that topic. If the topic is named "TeleFinder Questions," the folder name is "•TeleFinder Questions." The folder is very important since it contains the files with the text of each message. The Topic file, sometimes called the index file, contains the message headers and a file specification of the message file. Node Server uses this information to quickly display messages when the user wants to see them.
Once Path Memory locates both the file and the folder, it generates full path names so that it can re-create the file specification at a later time. The default name for the file containing this information is "SavedThreadPaths."
• Restore - In this step Path Memory reads the "SavedThreadPaths" file and restores file specification data in the Message Topic files using the paths. Path Memory locates the topics and folders using full path names. In order for to complete a successfull restore the paths on the new ( or backed-up ) hard disk must match the paths on the previous ( or crashed ) hard disk. Path Memory displays Macintosh File Manager error messages when it cannot locate a topic or message folder during the restore process.
How to Backup
- Open the Path Memory application.
- Select the "Backup Topic Paths…" command from the File menu. Path memory then opens the "Choose Folder" dialog.
- Choose a Folder that contains the topics that you want to back up. Or choose the disk icon if you want to backup all of the topics on a disk. After you select the starting folder Path Memory opens the "Save As" dialog.
- Use the default name ( "SavedThreadPaths" ) or enter a different name , then click in the Save button. Path Memory uses this file to store the paths. Path Memory will then begin searching for and storing paths to topics.
How to Restore
- Open the Path Memory application.
- Select the "Restore Topic File Specs…" command from the File menu. Path memory then opens the "Open" dialog.
- Use the Open dialog to select and open the "SavedThreadPaths" file from your disk. Path memory will then re-link the Message Topics to their message folders for each of the saved topics.
